Welcome to our first guest voice article

At Atomise, we’re often brought in when it’s time to turn validated ideas into working software. But smart product development starts well before a single line of code is written. That’s why we love shining a light on experts who focus on the earliest stage of the journey: making sure your product is solving the right problem for the right people.

This guest post comes from Caroline van den Bergh, founder of Lunos, whose work is all about uncovering the deep customer insights that make or break a product. Caroline specialises in validating demand, identifying real-world behaviours, and helping businesses build products on a foundation of genuine customer value.

If you’re at the stage of testing whether your idea resonates with your market, Caroline’s perspective will show you why research isn’t just a tick-box exercise—it’s the key to creating products people actually want.

Hi, I’m Caroline — a self-confessed customer research junkie. What began as a personal passion has evolved into the foundation of my business, Lunos. Research isn’t a side activity for us; it’s central to how we validate markets, test products, and uncover insights that truly move the needle.

My obsession started years ago at Nokia. Back then, the company was at the top of its game, dominating the mobile handset market. But when Apple began gaining ground, instead of listening to their own customers their needs, emotions, and lived experiences Nokia simply mirrored Apple. The result? Costly products that customers didn’t want, and a slow decline from market leader to cautionary tale.

That lesson has stuck with me: if you stop listening, you stop leading.

Why traditional research falls short

Traditional research falls short because relying solely on surveys and focus groups captures what people say rather than how they actually behave in real-world scenarios. These legacy methods introduce cognitive bias, deliver outdated static data, and fail to provide the real-time behavioral insights required to build high-impact products

  • Response bias – people often say what they think you want to hear.
  • The say–do gap – surveys measure intentions, not behaviours.
  • Context disconnect – insights are gathered in artificial environments, divorced from real life.

The outcome? Companies invest in features that look good in surveys but go unused. They miss the emotional drivers and subtle behaviours that truly shape customer decisions. Worst of all, they fail to connect research to the only thing customers really care about: the value they receive.

Lunos’ approach: Creating value led research

At Lunos, we believe research should do more than observe it should create value. By embedding research into real-world experiences, we capture insights that are richer, more authentic, and directly tied to customer behaviour.

Here’s how:

  1. Deliver real value, not hypotheticals
Instead of asking customers about abstract concepts, we create pilots or “minimum valuable processes” that help them right now. Authentic engagement reveals authentic behaviour.
  2. Iterative learning loops
We test, observe, adapt, and repeat. Each cycle compounds learning and uncovers the friction points, shortcuts, and unmet needs that traditional research misses.
  3. Contextual experiences
By embedding research in the environments where customers actually live, work, and decide, we expose truths that surveys alone can’t touch.

What happens when research creates value

When research and value creation come together, the impact is transformative:

  • Sharper priorities – what customers say they want often differs from what they actually need. Real-world pilots cut through the noise.
  • Hidden opportunities revealed – customer workarounds and “hacks” often point to quick wins and new directions businesses overlook.
  • Deeper trust and loyalty – when customers see value delivered along the way, they give more honest feedback and build stronger connections.

This isn’t research in isolation. It’s research as strategy, design, and customer success – all working in motion.

Rethinking the role of research

The future of insight isn’t about writing better survey questions. It’s about redefining the role of research itself:

  • From extracting opinions → to creating value
  • From testing in isolation → to embedding in context
  • From point-in-time studies → to continuous learning loops

At Lunos, this is how we operate. Research stops being a cost centre and becomes a growth engine fuelling innovation, product-market fit, and long-term customer success.

A simple framework

Think of it as a loop:

Engage → Observe → Iterate → Deliver Value → Growth → (Repeat)

Over time, this cycle creates a compounding feedback engine that scales with your business and drives you closer to product-led growth.
