Streamlining Deployment: Automating Serverless Function Releases for a Leading Financial Services Platform

Categories

- 2 min read

Client Overview

Industry: Financial Services and Investment Platforms
Challenge: The client relied on a manual release process for a suite of 35 serverless functions, the effect was significant for both the internal teams and the clients who relied on them to service their customers.

The Challenge

Our client, a leading financial services platform, was burdened by a manual and cumbersome release process across their 35 serverless functions. The deployment relied heavily on individual team members and local build processes. Deploying changes to just one environment could take up to 2 full days for a single resource. Additionally, synchronizing multiple source code branches for environments like development, pre-production, and production required a 4-day effort from multiple stakeholders.
This inefficient and manual approach often resulted in missed enhancements, defects, and errors reaching production due to human oversight, creating instability and uncertainty in their releases.

The Solution

Atomise took a holistic approach to this challenge, the problem may have a tech focussed solution but the stakeholders and requirements are never just technical. We engaged all stakeholders in the release process to design a solution that addressed the full scope of the issue. We focused on automating the entire build and deployment process, eliminating the need for manual intervention and reducing the risk of human error.
Our solution involved:

  • Automated pipelines: These pipelines allowed the pre-production environment to be rebased from development with just the click of a button, automatically triggering deployment to various environments.
  • Full visibility: Integrating the process with industry standard services JIRA & Confluence has eliminated the human error in translation, reduced the administrative burden, and provided transparency throughout the entire process to all stakeholders.

Outcome/Results

The impact was immediate and significant:

  • The manual effort involved in deploying the 35 serverless functions  was reduced from 2 full days to virtually none.
  • Synchronizing and deploying across environments, which previously took 4 days, can now be completed with a single button click, often scheduled during off-hours.
  • The deterministic build process eliminated failed deployments and missing changes, greatly enhancing release accuracy and reliability.

Key Metrics

  • Build time reduced to a fraction of the original duration.
  • Human error eliminated, the results in production defects and greater release accuracy further reducing unplanned & unknown work for each release.
  • The client saved approximately 6 days of manual effort per deployment cycle, allowing them to focus on delivering more value to users.

Client Testimonial

“Atomise didn’t just automate our process – they transformed our entire approach to releases. We, and our clients, now have confidence in our builds and deployments. Our team can focus on innovation instead of admin.”

Future Impact

The automation of the build and deployment process has laid the foundation for further efficiency and innovation. With a streamlined process in place, the client now has much greater bandwidth to focus on value-based development and enhancements, setting them up for continued growth and future stages of automation.
